Chinese academicians banned on commercial advertisements
font size

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has warned its academicians against commercially endorsing products, activities or services.

With their contributions to the progress of science and technology, academicians could be deeply influential with the public, said Bai Chunli, deputy president of the CAS.

Academicians should spread scientific knowledge and promote a scientific attitude, and Bai said.

A CAS media officer told Xinhua that some academicians were involved in commercial activities that had little to do with their research fields.

Businesses exploited the academicians' prestige to expand their commercial activities, drum up custom, and gain commercial advantages, said the officer.

Some academicians performed as "image ambassadors" in certain commercial activities and allowed their names to be used in endorsements, he said.

In 2001, the CAS issued a code of conduct, requiring academicians to honor and protect their reputations and to stem corrupt and illegal behavior in scientific fields.

Academicians are forbidden to participate in any activities seeking profits improperly, according to the rules.

The ban on commercial advertisements for them is in line with the requirement of the rules, Bai said.
