China calls on St. Lucia to abide by one-China policy
font size

China on Thursday called on the government of Saint Lucia to abide by the one-China policy.

China and Saint Lucia signed a joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1997.

China hopes that the Saint Lucia government will continue to abide by the principles underpinning ties between the two states, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said at a regular press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

The Taiwan authorities are constantly seeking to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" in the international arena, the spokesman said, but these attempts are doomed to failure.

Saint Lucia is a small island in the Caribbean with a population of approximately 170,000 people.
