Exiled Hamas Chief Khaled Meshaal has warned that the ongoing international embargo on the Palestinians would bring more attacks on Israel, Ramallah-based Palestinian Daily of al-Ayyam reported on Monday.

In an interview with al-Ayyam in Cairo, Meshaal said "if the Palestinians are kept under such a melancholic situation, an immense explosion of violence will be triggered."

"This explosion will not only harm the Palestinians alone, it will also harm the whole region, in particular the Zionist entity, " Meshaal told the daily on Saturday after holding talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who arrived in Cairo on a visit on Friday.

Meshaal, who arrived in Cairo also on Friday, discussed with Abbas ways of restructuring the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and boosting the political partnership between his Hamas movement and Abbas' Fatah.

Meshaal, exiled in Damascus since 2001, vowed earlier this month that his group would continue to resist Israel despite the three international preconditions for lifting embargo.

The international Quartet, which comprises the EU, the United States, the United Nations and Russia, imposed siege on Hamas-led government in late March, 2006, after Hamas refused to meet the Quartet's demands of renouncing violence, recognition of Israel and signed deals.

In a bid to lift the siege, a coalition government grouping Hamas and moderate Fatah was formed in accordance with Mecca deal signed on Feb. 8.

"The current embargo can never be justified after the agreement of Mecca on the formation of a national coalition," said Meshaal.
