Official says no Norwegian troops to Darfur soon
font size

Norwegian troops will not be sent to the African trouble spot of Darfur in the near future, said reports reaching here from Oslo on Monday.

According to Undersecretary of State Espen Barth Eide of the Department of Defense, the department is presently carrying on negotiations with the African Union (AU), but no early solution is in sight.

If an agreement is reached, Norway had offered to contribute 300 engineers and logistics experts to the peacekeeping force in Darfur.

According to the United Nations, at least 200,000 people have died because of the conflict in Darfur, and more than two million are refugees.
