Two British Gumball rally drivers detained for causing road death

Two British Gumball rally drivers have been detained in Macedonia after an alleged hit and run road accident which left one man dead and his wife seriously injured, news reaching here from Skopje reported on Thursday.

Macedonian police on Thursday identified the two men as Nicholas Morley, 30, and Mattyew McConvile, 32. They were driving a Porsche 911 in the Gumball 3000 rally.

Police said the two Britons' car collided on Wednesday with a local car at Struga in the southern part of Macedonia near the border with Albania.

Vladimir Cepuljoski, 67, was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital while his wife was in a critical condition.

"The two British men left the scene of the accident. Shortly afterward, border authorities found them in another car at the border crossing with Albania," a police spokesman said.

They were detained on charges of dangerous driving and abandoning accident victims. The police spokesman said the offences can carry a maximum one-year sentence if found guilty.

Gumball 3000 rally is an international celebrity sportswear race across Europe. Participants drive luxurious sports cars, making 3000 miles around Europe in eight days.
