Germany grants 1.5-million-euro humanitarian aid to Somalia
font size

Germany will provide an additional 1.5 million euros to fund humanitarian assistance in Somalia, the German Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

From the German aid, the Red Cross will receive one million euros to provide medical care to the wounded in the Somalia conflict. A German disaster relief agency, called "Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe", will get 500,000 euros to provide food to people who have been displaced after fleeing recent heavy fighting in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

The UN refugee agency says some 365,000 people have fled Mogadishu since the Ethiopian-backed transitional government troops ousted the Supreme Council of Islamic Courts from Mogadishu in January.

Germany has so far provided 4.75 million euros to help Somalis displaced domestically and in surrounding countries this year.
