Final U.S. brigade in "surge" plan heads to Baghdad
font size

The final troop contingent in the Bush administration's buildup in Iraq, a brigade that includes 152 helicopters, is heading to Baghdad, The Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

With the arrival of the 3rd Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade, the so-called "surge" of some 30,000 U.S. troops which began in mid-February will be complete, the report said.

Most notably, the air combat brigade will increase the U.S. helicopter fleet in Iraq by 34 percent.

They will be accompanied by 3,200 pilots, crew members, mechanics and other support personnel.

When completed, the buildup will bring the U.S. troop level in Iraq to 160,000.

As additional U.S. forces arrive in Baghdad, more carnage is predicted over the next three months, according to U.S. military commanders.
