About 600 kg of refined hashish were seized Monday by Algerian gendarmes in the department of Ain Temouchent, western Algeria, the Algerian daily Oran said Tuesday.

The drug haul, which was hidden in the trunk and under the rear seats of a Peugeot 505, was on its way to Oran, a major city in western Algeria.

Driven by an individual who is being actively sought by security forces, the vehicle forced its way through two police roadblocks before being abandoned in a small forest.

The gendarmes managed to arrest the driver of the vehicle, while his accomplice who was also traveling in the same car is still actively being sought, according to the daily.

Investigations have been launched into the matter with a view to determining the other people who are involved in the drug trafficking network.
