Nominations for the 2007 Tony awards were announced Tuesday, with Broadway hit musical Spring Wakening snatching 11 nominations.
The Coast of Utopia, a trilogy play covering three decades of Russian life and history in the mid-19th century, and Gray Gardens, a musical based on the film documentary of the same title about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' two relatives, each got 10 nominations.
Spring Wakening, the musical depicting teenagers' sexual angst in Germany in 1891, was nominated in the categories of best musical, book of a musical, original score written for theatre, performance by a leading actor and a featured actor in a musical, direction, choreography, scenic design, costume design, and lighting design.
The musical, originally premiered Off Broadway at the Atlantic Theatre Company, is based on the controversial 1891 play of the same title by German author Frank Wedekind.
The Coast of Utopia trilogy, including Voyage, Shipwreck and Salvage, first appeared in 2002 at the National Theatre in England. It features 44 actors playing 70 roles.
Tuesday's nominations covered 28 Broadway plays and musicals. Final results of the awards will be announced on June 10.
The Tony Awards, named after actress Antoinette Perry, were established by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, a year after the death of Perry, and have been offered ever since for "distinguished achievement" in the theatre.
