European Union foreign policy and security chief Javier Solana, who arrived in Lebanon on Tuesday on his regional tour, is set to meet with Lebanese senior officials over the Lebanon's ongoing political crises.
During a press conference in Beirut after he arrived in the country, Solana told reporters that he would meet with parliament speaker Nabih Berri and Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora.
He also said that the EU wanted to help Lebanon resolve the crisis and tackle its economic woes once the bloodshed is halted in the north where the army has been battling Islamic militants since Sunday.
His Lebanon tour comes as the UN Security Council works to impose the establishment of an international court to try suspects in the 2005 murder of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri.
A draft resolution has been circulated at the request of the Siniora government despite resistance from the pro-Damascus opposition.
Earlier in a statement released by his office in Brussels, the chief condemned the spiral of violence on the streets of Gaza and cross-border attacks from Israel, demanding a "political dialogue. "
"The violence must stop in all theatres," Solana noted, adding that the EU was ready "to help calm the situation and see if it is possible to move in establishing a political perspective."
Solana started his Mideast tour in Israel on Monday and he arrives in Lebanon Tuesday, the tour would also lead him to the Palestinian territories and Egypt.
