Cuban leader Fidel Castro criticized in an article published Tuesday Britain's decision to spend 7.5 billion U.S. dollars on four nuclear submarines instead of investing in health.
Britain plans to build an Astute-class submarine, which will carry both Spearfish torpedoes and up to 38 Tomahawk missiles with a 1,400-mile range.
After saying that Britons would surely feel no pride at their "impressive feat," Castro pointed out that the same money could train 75,000 doctors, treat 150 million patients, or build 3,000 multi-disciplinary clinics.
Castro said the submarines showed "the sophisticated weaponry with which the United States' imperial system intends to maintain their unsustainable development plan."
"(The late British Prime Minister Winston) Churchill said, 'Sink the Bismark.' Today (British Prime Minister Tony) Blair says: 'Sink what remains of Britain's prestige,'" Castro said in the article.
