Top Chinese legislator's upcoming visit to Poland is of particular significance as it demonstrates the wish of the two countries to further develop relations, said Ludwik Dorn, speaker of Poland's lower house of parliament.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, will begin his official goodwill visit to Poland on Thursday.

In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Dorn said Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Poland in 2004 was the first by a Chinese head of state since the two countries established diplomatic relations 58 years ago.

The visit was a success, he said. And Poland hopes that political contacts between the two countries can be regularized in accordance with the joint declaration signed during Hu's visit.

Top leaders need to visit each other's country with a gap of months or years, not decades, he said.

In the past 58 years, Poland and China have maintained contacts and cooperation in spite of changes both internationally and domestically, said Dorn.

In the 1950s, Poland was an important partner of China when the Asian country was isolated internationally, he said.

There has been rapid development of bilateral ties in recent years. Today, Poland and China are important partners, he said.

Dorn said his country will adhere to the "one-China" policy, and Poland supports the peaceful reunification of China and supports economic and civil contacts across the Taiwan Straits.

The reunification of China is an internal issue of China, he said. Like the European Union (EU), Poland emphasizes the peaceful means of reunification.

Poland's accession to the EU in 2004 offers new opportunities in cooperation with China in politics, economics, science and technology, he said.

The two countries enjoy a great potential for economic cooperation, said Dorn. Poland hopes that the current trade imbalance is reduced and that better conditions are created for Polish companies to enter the Chinese market.

He said there is also a great potential for mutual investments. He hopes that China can participate in infrastructure construction in Poland for the 2012 European Football Championship.

In addition to economic cooperation, tourism and education are the two areas that the two countries can explore, he said. Poland hopes that more Chinese will come visit Poland or study here.
