South African President Thabo Mbeki will fly to Abuja on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of Nigeria's President-elect Umaru Yar'Adua, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
This takes place "within the context of South Africa's commitment to consolidate political, economic and trade relations with Nigeria as part of efforts aimed at the consolidation of the African agenda," the ministry said in a statement.
In his earlier message of congratulations to Yar'Adua, Mbeki expressed South Africa's intention to continue forging closer working relations between the two countries.
Mbeki is expected to return home on Wednesday ahead of outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair's visit to South Africa on Thursday and Friday, the ministry said.
Mbeki was scheduled to hold discussions with Blair in Pretoria on Friday.
