The Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said Friday the starling found dead earlier in Mong Kok was confirmed to be H5N1 positive.

The starling was collected at 101-109 Boundary Street at Mong Kok on May 26 by the department staff following a public referral. After a series of laboratory tests, the dead bird was found positive for H5N1 avian flu virus.

"They should avoid personal contact with wild birds and live poultry and clean their hands thoroughly after coming into contact with them," said a department spokesman, reminding the public to observe good personal hygiene.
