Four U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq

Four U.S. soldiers were killed and another wounded in insurgent attacks in Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The U.S. military said a soldier was killed on June 1 in central Baghdad when insurgents attacked his unit at approximately noon in the vicinity of Zawiyah area in Karradah neighborhood.

Saturday's statements also said three more soldiers were killed during May, which marks the highest toll this year for the U.S. military and the third since the outbreak of the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

The first soldier was killed on Thursday when his patrol was attacked with small arms fire in eastern Baghdad, a statement said.

Another soldier was killed and another wounded on Wednesday during combat security operation in the Iraqi capital when insurgents attacked their unit with small arms fire, another statement said.

One interpreter was also wounded in the attack, it added without identifying his nationality.

The third soldier died of wounds sustained from a roadside bomb explosion while conducting combat operations in southwest of Baghdad on Wednesday, the military said.

So far, at least 127 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq in May and more than 3,475 U.S. soldiers killed in four years war in the war-torn country, according to media reports based on Pentagon figures.
