Frank Hsieh, who will run as the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) candidate for Taiwan leader in the 2008 election, was questioned on Friday by prosecutors on the alleged misuse of campaign donations when he ran for mayor of Kaohsiung, according to local media.
Prosecutors wanted to find out whether donations that Hsieh allegedly received in 2002 from a subway construction firm via his supporters' club were linked in any way to contracts the firm won after Hsieh's reelection.
Prosecutors said they could not rule out the possibility that Hsieh would be questioned several times in the coming months due to the complexity of the case.
Hsieh was mayor of Taiwan's second largest city Kaohsiung from 1998 to 2005.
