Chinese special representative may meet U.S. envoys on Darfur issue
font size

Liu Guijin, special representative of the Chinese government for Darfur, may meet with U.S. representatives to discuss the Darfur issue during an upcoming overseas trip, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said on Tuesday.

Since being appointed China's special representative for Darfur in May, Liu has paid a fact-finding trip to Sudan.

Qin said the modalities of a possible meeting between Liu and U.S. envoys still need to be defined.

Progress has been made on the Darfur issue and China will continue to contribute to the resolution of the issue, Qin said.

China is at one with the international community in aiming to resolve the Darfur issue through political means so as to bring peace, development and stability to the region at an early date, he said.

China encourages all parties to step up the political process based on the Annan plan (three phase UN peacekeeping plan), and seek measures to ease the humanitarian and security issues in the region, he added.
