German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged here on Sunday European Union (EU) member states to "make compromises" in a bid to agree on a "road map" for reviving the stalled process of the EU constitution at next week's EU summit in Brussels.
Speaking after meeting Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, Merkel also pledged to conduct "emergency consultations" with leaders of other EU members before the June 21-22 EU summit.
Meanwhile, Merkel, whose country is holding the rotating EU presidency, acknowledged that "we still have several serious problems to solve" before the summit.
Juncker promised that he would join Merkel in persuading leaders of some EU countries to agree on the "road map."
He also expressed his optimism that a deal could be reached on the "road map" at the EU summit.
Poland has been the bone of contention as it opposes any deal reducing Poland's voting rights. Poland has also won support from the Czech Republic.
Merkel said that Poland has changed little in its stance after her four hours of talks with Polish President Lech Kaczynski on Saturday in Germany.
Merkel hopes to submit a "road map" plan for reviving the EU constitution at the EU summit. The major opponents to her draft are Poland, Britain, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
To bridge gap over the contentious issue, EU foreign ministers held a closed-door night session on Sunday. They will continue their talks on Monday and Tuesday.
