The central council of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) recommended on Thursday to dissolve militias of rival Fatah and Hamas movements.
The recommendation comes one day after President Mahmoud Abbas, who is also chairman of the PLO, rejected to hold talks with Hamas leaders when chairing a meeting of the central council on Wednesday.
The PLO, which is dominated by Abbas' Fatah movement, has long considered itself as the only representative of the Palestinian people. Hamas is not a member of the body.
Palestinian observers said the recommendation would satisfy an American demand which aims to pave the way for the implementation of the Roadmap peace plan in the Middle East.
Militants of Hamas' armed wing al-Qassam Brigades as well as the executive force took control of all security headquarters in the Gaza Strip, including the home and office of Abbas and late leader Yasser Arafat last week.
In the wake of the violent takeover of Hamas, most Fatah leaders fled the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.
Likewise, Fatah militants had carried out retaliatory actions against Hamas figures in the West Bank.
