Jordan's King Abdullah II and British Prime Minister Tony Blair discussed the latest situation in the Middle East during a telephone conversation on Saturday, calling for more efforts from international community to support the Palestinians.

According to Jordan's official Petra news agency, Abdullah II highlighted the need for the international community to intensify its efforts to support the Palestinians and return the Palestinian and Israeli sides to the negotiating table to resume the peace process.

For his part, Blair manifested his country's stands towards the various issues in the region, especially in the Palestinian territories.

Tony Blair could soon be appointed the envoy for the Middle East Quartet, comprising the UN, the EU, the United States and Russia, after he steps down later this month.

Last week, the Islamic Resistance movement (Hamas) militarily took control of the Gaza Strip, drawing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' decision to dissolve the unity government and form an emergency government in the West Bank.

Gaza now remains in the grip of Hamas movement, while the West Bank is fully controlled by Abbas and his Fatah movement. The Arab league has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the Palestinian crisis.
