Gordon Brown, the prime-minister-in-waiting, is to be announced new leader of Britain's ruling Labor Party at a special conference here on Sunday afternoon.

The 56-year-old Chancellor, unchallenged to be leader, will be officially endorsed as Tony Blair's successor. He will become prime minister on Wednesday after meeting the Queen.

A new deputy leader will also emerge from six candidates, namely Education Secretary Alan Johnson, International Development Secretary Hilary Benn and Justice Minister Harriet Harman, backbencher Jon Cruddas, Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain and Labour chairwoman Hazel Blears, to succeed John Prescott.

Latest poll for the Observer newspaper on Sunday shows that Labour leads by three percentage points over the Conservative Party for the first time since last October.

A total of 40 percent of some 1,000 people polled said Brown would make the most capable leader, while 22 percent chose David Cameron, the Tory leader and five percent, the Liberal Democratic leader.
