UN experts warn urbanization in Tanzania
font size

United Nations population experts have warned that urbanization in Tanzania will reach a ratio of 46 percent by the year 2015.

The figure was revealed through the State of World Population 2007 Report compiled by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The report was launched in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

UNFPA Deputy Country Representative Christopher Mwaijonga said while launching the report that policymakers in the country should make sure that people migrating to urban areas receive basic services in that migration to urban areas.

The UNFPA report quoted Tanzania National Bureau of Statistics as indicating that the population in Tanzania would be increasing by 46.1 percent in 2015.

Tanzania posted a population growth of 23 percent in 2002 when the country surveyed its population to be between 34 million and 36 million.

Population growth rate was 6.2 percent back in 1967.
