Amsterdam airport warns of flight delays due to wind
font size

Passengers should be prepared for flight delays or cancellations at the Amsterdam international airport Tuesday as heavy wind has led to the closure of a runway, Dutch news agency ANP reported Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Air Traffic Control the Netherlands said Tuesday that air traffic is facing difficulty because of the weather.

"The wind is so heavy that we can only use one runway for take off and landing. As a result passengers will encounter delays. We expect this to continue until evening," the spokesperson said.

More than 60 flights can land each hour during busy times at the airport when two runways are used. Now only about 20 flights are able to take off and land each hour.

The Amsterdam international airport, the main air hub of the Netherlands, has warned passengers of delays and possible cancellations on its website.

Meanwhile, Dutch motorists' association the ANWB also warned that heavy wind may cause danger for motorists all along the Dutch coast Tuesday. The national meteorological institute KNMI has forecast gusts of up to 90 km per hour and possible heavy rainfall.
