Nigerian opposition parties agree to join government
font size

Nigeria's major opposition parties have announced here to join the government of national unity proposed by President Umaru Yar'Adua.

The All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and Peoples Progressive Alliance, two of Nigeria's leading opposition, had held talks respectively with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for couple of days before clinching the deals.

The two sides agreed to review all the privatization and concession of public institutions which took place from March 1 to May 29. The Electoral Act and 1999 Constitution will also be reconsidered, according to the announcement.

The three parties are also determined to carry out urgent solution to the Niger Delta crisis and cooperation in the national and state assemblies.

But PDP's negotiation with the Action Congress (AC), another major opposition, has yet to come out with any results due to disagreement on some issues.

After victory in April's national presidential poll, President Yar'Adua offered to form a government of national unity so as to solve political quarrels over the election which is bombarded as" not credible" by opposition parties and some international observers.
