Sacked Hamas-Prime Minister Ismail Haneya visited on Saturday the house of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Gaza City following reports that the house was looted by Hamas militants two weeks ago.
As he was inside Arafat's house in western Gaza City, Haneya telephoned Arafat's widow Suha al-Taweel, who is based in Tunis with her daughter Zahwa, 11 years old, and informed her that her late husband's house was not hurt.
"The house as you see, was not harmed as the media reported, it will be protected and would never be harmed," Haneya told Arafat's widow on telephone, then repeated the same sentence in a news conference held in Arafat's house.
He said that he promised Ms. Suha Arafat to send her a video tape of the house showing that it was not harmed or damaged, adding "to show also that nothing had been looted as some media reported."
On June 14, Islamic Resistance Movement, or Hamas' armed wing al-Qassam Brigades and the police auxiliary force took control over President Mahmoud Abbas' house and office as well as all his police and security headquarters in the Gaza Strip.
Abbas and his Fatah movement accused Hamas and its militants for breaking into all the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) buildings and offices and had looted all properties inside.
Fahim Za'areer, Fatah movement's spokesman in the West Bank described Haneya's visit to Arafat's house as "a disaster to the Palestinian nationality and all the Palestinian sacrifices."
"It is better for Haneya to protect the house of late leader Yasser Arafat instead of dirtying it by Hamas murderers who led the coup of the Palestinian legitimacy," said Za'areer.
