Some 330 high school students from across the country participated Monday in the opening ceremony of the 12th National Creative English Contest, a week-long academic competition held every summer, taking place this year at Haileybury International School (Wuqing) in Tianjin.

The winners of the English competition will also have the chance to be admitted to prestigious universities, which have the right to independently admit students in China.

Guo Xiaochuan, editor-in-chief of magazine College and University Admission, said at the ceremony that the contest has helped thousands of students enter their preferred colleges and universities, which is the aim of the contest.

Nicholas Dwyer, the school's president, welcomed the students and wished them well for the week.

The welcoming also included a party, replete with dances and ice-breaker games meant to help the students get to know one another.

During the summer camp, students will also receive training on reading, writing and speaking English and have the chance to visit top universities.
