Zhenyuan County is located in the Wuling Mountain area in eastern Guizhou province. It is a transition of skewed land towards Jiangxi Hills and the east gate of Guizhou province. Wuyang river meanders from west to east, harmonizing with the mountain and this unique Tai Ji style city. It has been honored with the title of "Eastern Venice".
Zhen Yuan is a museum of Chinese cliff architecture. Old streets and paths were always secluded and quiet, stone bridges are well-arranged. There are more than 160 sites where old apartments, alleys and even wharfs from the Ming and Qing dynasties have been well preserved. The style of the architecture in Zhenyuan is mainly cyan bricks with dark titles, which were popular in the Qing dynasty. Every brick has survived through centuries, and are witnesses to Chinese history.
Zhenyuan is also connected with India and Myanmar. It can be considered an important station of the "North Silk Road" because of its significant political, cultural and commercial position in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The booming of commercial and cultural interaction makes Zhenyuan a tolerant city with a "traditional culture puzzle" name. Over hundreds of years the local culture has been very well preserved here, for instance, on every March 3rd, the Dong ethnic minority's Valentine's Day and September 9th, the Miao minority's harvest season as celebrated in the lunar calendar, people perform many traditional activities, attracting visitors from around the world.
