Peking University recently announced that the Micro Processor Research and Development Center has acquired x86 microprocessor design technology.
PKUnity Microsystems Technology Co Ltd, sponsored by the university, said it is capable of making PCs with domestically developed processors. Ultra mobile PCs using this new technology will come out next year. This release will mark a new development in the "Chinese chip".
X86 is a generic name for the series of Intel microprocessor families that began with the 286 microprocessor. X86 microprocessors include the 386, 486 and 586 families. Most personal computers are based on this technology.
US Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in October 2005, with the Ministry of Science and Technology and Peking University, to license AMD x86 microprocessor design technology that will enable China to develop low-power, embedded computer solutions for consumer and commercial markets. This is, so far, the highest-level of CPU technology transfer.
After studying the technology of and making innovations on the x86 microprocessor, Peking University has successfully developed FPGA which is compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems.
