China's first high-yielding twin calves, cloned from somatic cells, were born at the Shunyuan Dairy Farm in Qian'an, Hebei Province on July 8th.
The high-yielding cloned calves were bred by China's Agricultural University and Langfang Shenglong Bio-tech Co. Ltd., according to the manager of the dairy farm, Shao Shunyuan.
The natural birth of the two calves indicated a new development in breeding milk cows in China.
According to Shao, the US Holstein cow is one of the world's highest yielding breed of milk cows. They produce approximately 17 tons of milk annually, 2 to 3 times that of the ordinary ones.
Shao said China's success will play a revolutionary role in the country's milk-producing cow industry, and will accelerate the pace of breeding new milk cows.
