British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is scheduled to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Monday on his first trip abroad since he took over from Tony Blair last month, a German government spokesman said Friday.

The leaders will talk about European and international affairs, said Ulrich Wilhelm.

Merkel invited Brown to visit Germany when she congratulated him on becoming Britain's prime minister on June 27.

The German chancellor said in her message that a close relationship between Germany and Britain is "particularly important" for the well-being of Europe and good trans-Atlantic relations.
