Zhou Shengxian, minister of the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), at a national lake pollution control work conference on July 12th, said that the issue of ecological degradation in China's lakes is very serious. An average of 20 natural lakes disappears annually, and water environments continue to disappear.

Blind reclamation of marshland and excessive use of water resources have led to the reduction of, and even extinction, of lake areas, Zhou said. An annual average of 20 natural lakes disappears in China. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China over 50 years ago, there has been a reduction in about 1,000 inland lakes.
