Two Kenyan nationals have been detained in northern Tanzania after a six-hour gun battle on Friday with a police task force, according to local media reports on Saturday.
Arusha Regional Police Commander Basilio Matei identified the duo as Samwel Gittau Saitoti and Peter Michael Kimenya, who work as bus and truck drivers respectively. The police have also detained a Tanzanian national who was suspected to be an accomplice.
The police suspect that the two Kenyan nationals had been part of the gang of bandits who had raided and robbed a National Microfinance Bank Arusha branch two weeks ago. The bandits killed one policeman on duty before taking away 234 million Tanzanian shillings (187,000 U.S. dollars).
The police have found from their hideout two sub-machine guns, one light machine gun, five pistols and two bullet-proof jackets as well as rounds of munitions. The two detainees also placed two hand grenades to the main entrance to their hideout in the suburbs of Arusha.
