Uruguay will compete in the judo and javelin competitions of the third World Athletics Games for the blind, which runs from Saturday until Aug. 8 in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, sports authorities said on Thursday.

The athletes had spent more than a year of effort and preparation to qualify for the competition and for the Para Pan-American Games, which run from Aug. 12 to Aug. 19 in Rio de Janeiro, said Sergio Perez, president of the Uruguayan Mutual Society for Blind and Partially Sighted Athletes.

Perez said that Uruguay may also get to host the next World Games.

The Games act as qualifying competitions for the 2008 Para-lympic Games, held in China's capital Beijing.

The Para-Pan-American Games will use the same facilities as the Pan-American Games, which end on Sunday. There will be some 1,300 athletes and 700 team members for the 10 different sports. It is the third edition of the Para-Pan-American Games. The first was in Mexico City in 1999 and the second in the Argentine city of Mar del Plata in 2003.
