Facing the age discrepancies of two Chinese basketballers at the Bangkok Universiade, Chinese senior sports officials denied any irregularities in the registration of the Chinese players.

Chinese basketball players Xie Libin and Han Shuo registered identical 21 years old on the Universiade roster, which were different from their registered ages in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league, according to a byline report on the asia- basket.com on Tuesday.

Both were registered as 24 years old on the CBA roster.

"There are two ways of registering the athletes for the Universiade," said Wang Gang, Secretary General of the Chinese Universiade delegation.

"The basic information of some athletes, such as divers, is provided by the General Administration of Sports. The information of others comes from the records made by universities and colleges when they absorbed those students."

High-school graduates must provide their personal IDs to the universities or colleges they enter.

"And we also have the passport of every Chinese athlete in the Bangkok University Games. The age of everyone is the same as that on the registration to the Games Organizing Committee," Wang added.

Li Yuanwei, director of the Chinese Basketball Management Center and CBA vice president, said in a telephone interview that the CBA registration is legal.

"CBA clubs must provide the identification card and birth certification of each player to compete in the league," Li said. " We have strict rules of registration in the CBA handbook, and that is the fundamental of the league."

"The only thing I'm quite sure is that the information the clubs gave to us are legal and correct," Li said.

However, neither Wang nor Li gave any explanation to the age difference problem here.

"The Ministry of Public Security began to release the birth certification of every person on its official website last year. We checked every player registered in this year's domestic youth competitions and found many age discrepancies. Some of the fake registrations were turned down by CBA," Li said.
