China, who edged title favorite Russia 39-38 in the semifinal, overcame South Korea 40-31 to take the women's team foil title at the Bangkok Universiade on Thursday.

"This is an unexpected triumph," said China coach Chu Wei.

"We are not the strongest team in the competition as Liu Yuan merely finished third in the individual event and both Ruan Laidi and Chen Jinyan are debutants in world arena," Chu noted.

Japan beat Russia 45-36 in the bronze medal match.

The Universiade men's saber team title was clinched by Ukraine on Thursday.
