Athens Olympic gold medalists Iker Martinez/Xabier Fernadez finished first after 2 races in 49ER at Qingdao International Regatta.

"Yesterday, we made some mistakes, but finished first thanks to a bit of luck," said Martinez. "Today, we had a good, solid day of racing, and we are very satisfied with our performance."

"We did very well on the first upwind, and managed to keep the lead until the end of the race," she added.

Thanks to the appropriate weather on Thursday, all the 11 events set sail fairly well.

The Chinese are in third in both the RS:X Men and RS:X Women's classes.

Zhou Yuanguo opened the regatta with a victory for the home team, stealing the show with a 38-second lead around the first mark in the men's division and maintaining it around the entire trapezoidal course.

He finished sixth in the second race. Tom Ashley from New Zealand finished on top.

On the women's part, Yin Jian had a nearly 100-yard lead around the first weather mark of the first race and had a difficult time keeping Shaw Bryony of Britain at bay.

Shaw and Allessandra Sensini of Italy traded places for the final three legs of the race, with Shaw coming out the winner.

Qingdao International Regatta runs from August 9 to 24 and features 11 events of 9 classes.
