Danai Udomchoke, Thai men's singles champion at Doha Asian Games, claimed the gold medal at the 24th Bangkok Universiade on Thursday, bringing the host up to the top of tennis medal standings.
The top seed Udomchoke was seriously challenged by his rival, fourth seeded An Jae Sung of South Korea, at the beginning of the final, when the host's favorite lost the first set in 6-3.
Udomchoke, however, managed to pull back in time after the break, and overwhelmed An in 6-1, pushing the match into the decisive third set. The bullheaded South Korean struggled to bring the set into the breathtaking tie break, but Udomchoke eventually ended the 160-minute-long final with a 8-6 win in tie break.
Alisa Kleybanova of Russia beat Estonia's Margit Ruutel in two straight sets to claim the women's single title for the Russian squad. Nevertheless, the powerful Russian girl and her partner Alexander Krasnorutkiy lost to Eva Hrdinova/Pavel Snobel from Czech Republic in the mixed double final later tonight.
