The Communist Party of Nepal ( Maoist) (CPN-M) on Monday announced a series of nationwide protest programs to pressurize the government to concede its 22-point pre- requisite for the constituent assembly (CA) election.
Issuing separate appeals, chairman of the CPN-M Prachanda and coordinator of the Joint Revolutionary People's Council Dr. Baburam Bhattarai urged the political parties, professional organizations, civil society and media of Nepal to support their demand for announcement of republic from the parliament before the CA election and proportional electoral system.
The CPN-M has also warned of a new people's movement from the government, parliament and the street if their 22-point demand is not met.
The CPN-M leaders said the protest program include campaign, internal preparations and mobilization of the CPN-M cadres in the first phase starting from Aug. 20 till Sept. 17 followed by phase- wise mass meetings across the country, assemblies, people's action and political strikes from Sept. 18 onwards.
In their statements, the CPN-M leaders urged the government to nationalize the King's property, withdraw the Nepal Army from the Royal palace and arrange separate security provisions for the King.
Urging the government to form a special committee to integrate the CPN-M's "People's Liberation Army" into the Nepal Army and also to form a security council, the statements called for a round table meeting for proportional representation in the CA.
The statements also called for the immediate formation of local bodies and the setting up of a special panel to curb corruption in government offices. The two leaders also demanded that the government bring to book and punish all those guilty of the massacre of CPN-M cadres occurred during the Terai unrest.
