The number of electoral constituencies in Morocco for the forthcoming legislative elections, have been increased to 95 from the previous 91, Moroccan News Agency (MAP) reported Thursday.

This slight increase of constituencies was done by enforcing the amendments introduced during the division of electoral boundaries, with a view to harmonizing them with the new Moroccan administrative map.

These changes were done by dividing existing electoral areas of large urban agglomerations, which were previous made up of several urban districts, before the return in 2003, of a town administrative unit, in conformity with provisions of the new communal charter.

A total of 32 constituencies in 26 administrative units and provinces were affected by the creation of four new electoral constituencies bringing the total number to 95.

Moroccan interior minister Chakib Benmoussa said the changes were done in accordance with objectivity and transparency, considering the constraints, and the fact that the number of 295 seats in the chamber of representatives to be contested in local constituencies remains the same.
