A minister-level committee in Nepal decided in a meeting on Thursday to bring properties belonging to the Nepali royal family under government ownership.
The committee, comprising five ministers and headed by Nepali Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula, was formed by the cabinet on Aug. 20 and given the task of nationalizing the property belonging to Late King Birendra and Queen Ayshwarya and the property inherited by King Gyanendra by virtue of being the monarch within 15 days.
Minister for Physical Planning and Works Hisila Yami told reporters that the committee has decided to register seven palaces, including the Royal Palace situated in Nepali capital where the King is currently living, under the name of the government of Nepal.
He said the committee has already sent notice to concerned offices to stop the registration and transfer of all property and land owned by the King and the royal family.
The committee has also decided to freeze the bank accounts of the King, the Queen and the Crown Prince to stop the transfer of money belonging to the late King Birendra and late Queen Ayshwarya.
