Nigerian lifters target gold in weightlifting worlds

Seven female and three male weightlifters departed the country Thursday for Thailand, venue of the World Weightlifting Championship.

The event, which also serves as Olympic qualifying tournament, holds from Sept. 16 to 26.

The Nigerian female team comprises Onyeke Azike (48kg), Patience Lawal (53kg) Margaret Uwah (58kg), Agatha Ebudike (63kg) Bunmi Adekola (69kg), Adiza Bakare (75kg) and Marian Usman (+75kg), while the male lifters are Yinka Aiyeiwa (63kg) Isiaku Aliu (69kg) and Felix Ekpo (77kg).

Secretary of the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Steve Olarinoye, said the lifters are in high spirit and ready to do Nigeria proud.

According to him, the lifters have been in camp since August 29 in readiness for the tourney courtesy of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and there is no doubt that they will deliver.

The scribe revealed that everything regarding motivation has been provided for the team to keep it in victory mood and all the lifters were waiting for was to jet out of the country early enough for acclimatization, just as it was in Algiers 2007.

He promised that the team would not disappoint Nigerians at the meet, more so when the event is also an Olympic qualifier.
