Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched a charity initiative to help one million children in developing countries, local newspaper Khaleej Times reported on Thursday.

Under the initiative, a fund named "Dubai Cares" will be raised in a six-week campaign, the report said. The money raised will go to countries which lack resources for education and face major impediments to growth and stability.

"The campaign will assist countries in achieving their UN Millennium Development Goals set eight years ago for providing primary education to every child by 2015," Sheikh Mohammed was quoted as saying.

"The millennium development goals, which the countries pledged to fulfill, emphasized on education as the best long-term solution to alleviate poverty in the developing world," he added.

The UAE vice president said that by promoting education in other countries, he aims to reinforce the principle that education guarantees stability, prosperity and progress and brings about positive change throughout the world.
