India's most senior Left leader Jyoti Basu Saturday ruled out the possibility of any compromise with the federal government over New Delhi's nuclear deal with the United States.

"We cannot compromise. Let us see what the Congress (party) does and then we shall take a decision," the Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted Basu as telling reporters Saturday.

Basu's Communist Party of India (Marxist), whose support is crucial for the survival of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government, is staunchly opposed to the nuclear deal with the United States.

But Singh and his Congress party have ruled out backtracking on the pact.

Basu's comments came amidst reports that some CPI (M) leaders from West Bengal, a Left-stronghold, were opposed to their party's "hardline" of over the nuclear agreement.

He said he himself had conveyed the CPI (M)'s viewpoint on the accord to the Congress party Friday.
