Tian Congming, president of China's Xinhua News Agency, met in Beijing on Monday with Geoffrey Howe, former British deputy prime minister who now chairs the Thomson Foundation.
The two sides had an extensive discussion on promoting cooperation between Xinhua and Thomson Foundation.
Tian said gaps still exist between Xinhua and news agencies in developed countries in capital, technology and management, and especially personnel.
"We are willing to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the Thomson Foundation and learn from each other," Tian told Howe.
He also briefed Howe on preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, noting Xinhua would like to work with foreign media organizations to train Chinese journalists for the event.
Howe said nearly 800 Chinese journalists has received training under the Thomson Foundation programs since 1985, when Xinhua and the foundation formed cooperative ties. The foundation will further promote cooperation with Xinhua.
After the meeting, a cooperation agreement was signed between Xinhua's training center and the foundation.
