The 2008 green environment book - Crisis and Turning around China's Environment (2008) - just came off the press recently through the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. It points out that China's energy efficiency and emission reduction achieved initial success in 2007.
According to reports, the year of 2007 was crucial for reversing the passive situation of energy efficiency and emissions reduction. Energy efficiency and emissions reduction were the most important tasks of environmental protection work. The country also launched tax policies and enhanced environmental law enforcement and system construction. The central government earmarked 23.5 billion yuan to support energy efficiency and emissions reduction.
In December 2007, the State Development and Reform Commission announced that in the first three quarters, China's energy consumption per unit of GDP dropped for the first time by 3% from the same period the previous year. There was a reverse in the rising trend of emissions of sulfur dioxide and the chemical oxygen demand, both dropping for the first time.
