Throughout the history of the region, Bangladeshi arts and crafts have been closely linked to its culture, with leather goods an important part of that heritage.
Following Bangladesh's independence in 1971, the leather industry was given export priority, with the emphasis on producing high-quality leather goods.
By combining the latest in technology with abundant raw materials and inexpensive skilled labor, leather and finished leather goods are now playing an important role in the country's overall economic performance.
Bangladesh is capable of producing about 16.72 million sq m of leather annually. The industry produces the world's top-quality smooth grained goatskin, while its cow leather has an excellent natural fiber structure that is fine to the touch.
More than 80 percent of the country's annual production of leather, footwear, bags, purses and gloves are exported worldwide.
Footwear and leather accessories have indeed made great strides, with 25 large modern factories making footwear along with 2,500 smaller shoe workshops spread across the country.
More than 50 manufacturers produce other leather goods for export, including suitcases, briefcases, fashion accessories, belts, wallets and handbags. The industry has now grown to include distinctive leather fashion garments.
Its leather goods are now exported to more than 50 countries, including Italy, Brazil, Germany, Singapore, China and the United States.
