Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his hope Monday that the UN's internal watchdog would investigate new allegations of gold smuggling and arms trading by UN peacekeepers in Congo.

Human Rights Watch released internal UN documents last week, showing serious allegations of wrongdoing by Pakistani and Indian peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The rights group accused the UN's watchdog, the Office of Internal Oversight Services known as OIOS, of ignoring or seriously downplaying the extent of the problems. It asked the secretary-general to investigate OIOS' failings.

Ban disagreed with that accusation and noted that OIOS is an independent body created by the General Assembly.
