Overseas Chinese have expressed their fears and condolences for families, friends and countrymen in Sichuan, the province worst hit by Monday's deadly earthquake.
Xia Yao, who is studying at a university in California in the United States, said: "I tried calling my family in China several times as soon as I heard the news. But I couldn't reach them."
Xia is from Guang'an in Sichuan province, which is located about 200 km from the quake's epicenter.
His father lives in Leshan, his mother in Guang'an and his girlfriend in Chengdu.
He said he was relieved yesterday morning when he got a call from his father telling him everyone was fine.
Xia's concerns have been echoed in Chinese communities throughout the US, the Los Angeles Times reported.
In LA itself, members of the Chinese community - one of the largest in the country - have barely been able to work, with their minds on their homeland and the rising death toll, the newspaper said.
Several groups of Chinese students have been trying to organize aid for victims.
The Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the University of California in LA, posted a call for donations on its website immediately after news of the quake broke.
"Our motherland, China, is bleeding from this disaster. We are calling for donations to help those in desperate need.
"We are with them during this terrible disaster and must help them to rebuild their homes and communities," the message said.
