According to reports, since the Ministry of Water Resources designated poverty reduction in the six poor counties of the Three Gorges-Chongqing reservoir area, water conservancy infrastructure construction has accelerated in the Three Gorges reservoir area; rural production and living conditions have improved; the economic and social development and poverty reduction process continue to accelerate; and a total of over 3 million people have received tangible benefits from water conservancy poverty reduction.
The Ministry of Water Resources has been taking on the designated poverty reduction task in the Three Gorges reservoir area since 1986; as well as designated poverty reduction in the six poverty-stricken counties of Chongqing: Fengdu, Kaixian, Yunyang, Chengkou, Wuxi and Wulong, in the new round of poverty reduction work in 2001. By the end of 2007, the six counties' total volume of water conservancy storage，diversion and pumping reached 1.129 billion cubic meters. The areas could cope with 5,497 square kilometers of soil erosion; and 1.08 million people said goodbye to unsafe drinking water and drinking water difficulties. Up to 22,000 poor households now have access to electricity.
By 2007, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the six counties reached 20.564 billion yuan; the per capita net income of farmers reached 2,238 yuan; and 280,000 people had been taken out of absolute poverty.
