China's Ministry of Transportation (MOT) announced on June 3 that in 424 towns, almost 97 percent of the 439 towns hardest-hit by the May 12 quake in Sichuan Province, road links had been restored as of 8:00 a.m. on June 2.
Among the 15 towns where highways were still closed, 13 were affected by "quake lakes" formed by the landslides that blocked rivers, said He Jianzhong, spokesman for the ministry.
At present, the western line, the section from the Gengda to Yingxiu, is now advancing from both sides to the middle; and has yet to restore 20 kilometers. The east line, from Maoxian to Beichuan on the Provincial Highway route 302, has been restored up to the Tang Jiashan quake lakes from Maoxian. However, it cannot advance further at this time. Along south line, from Yingxiu to Wenchuan, only 4.1 kilometers have been opened. It is extremely difficult to restore the road and progress is slow because the roadbed ahead has been buried by the collapsed mountain.
